What is the theme of the poem “The Unknown Citizen” by W.H. Auden?

Hi, I’m in 8th grade doing an English assignment on the theme of “The Unknown Citizen” by W.H. Auden. This is the poem:

He was found by the Bureau of Statistics to be
One against whom there was no official complaint,
And all the reports on his conduct agree
That, in the modern sense of an old-fashioned word, he was a saint,
For in everything he did he served the Greater Community.
Except for the War till the day he retired
He worked in a factory and never got fired,
But satisfied his employers, Fudge Motors Inc.
Yet he wasn’t a scab or odd in his views,
For his Union reports that he paid his dues,
(Our report on his Union shows it was sound)
And our Social Psychology workers found
That he was popular with his mates and liked a drink.
The Press are convinced that he bought a paper every day
And that his reactions to advertisements were normal in every way.
Policies taken out in his name prove that he was fully insured,
And his Health-card shows he was once in hospital but left it cured.
Both Producers Research and High-Grade Living declare
He was fully sensible to the advantages of the Installment Plan
And had everything necessary to the Modern Man,
A phonograph, a radio, a car and a frigidaire.
Our researchers into Public Opinion are content
That he held the proper opinions for he time of year;
When there was peace, he was for peace; when there was war, he went.
He was married and added five children to the population,
Which our Eugenist says was the right number for a parent of his generation.
And our teachers report that he never interfered with their education.
Was he free? Was he happy? The question is absurd:
Had anything been wrong, we should certainly have heard

From Shmoop Poetry on The Unknown Citizen

The poem is written in the voice of a fictional government bureaucrat – someone who sits at a desk and shuffles papers all day – whose decisions affect the lives of people he has never met. You could consider it a poetic version of George Orwell’s 1984 or Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, in that it concerns a Big Brother-like state that knows everything about its citizens except the things that really matter. But the poem doesn’t sound as pessimistic or tortured as either of these novels It uses good old-fashioned humor to protest the numbing effects of modern life. It’s not the most “intellectual” of Auden’s works, but that doesn’t make it any less powerful to read. “The Unknown Citizen” is proof that great poetry doesn’t have to take itself seriously all the time.

Wordpress template stuff?

Okay, I know that there's the program Wordpress and the blog host Wordpress. What I want to know is, can you make a template in the program Wordpress and use it on the blog host wordpress? If that isn't possible, what are some FREE blog hosts that lets one use custom made templates with wordpress?

Thank you!

Simply, you can't have it both ways. Either you get a free blog and you deal with the limited styling on wordpress.com, or you find linux web hosting with a mysql database and setup the wordpress.org software (and then enjoy all the free open source themes).

You can search all day for "free wordpress hosting" or "free linux hosting" but you will always get what you pay for.

Can I customize or create my own Wordpress theme without extensive web design knowledge?

I am interested in started a blog, and after conducting some research, I’ve decided that Wordpress would suite my needs quite nicely in terms of platform and support. However, I am a very artistic person and I am not comfortable using a standard blogging template. I have a very limited knowledge of html/css/java/etc., but I know my way around programs like Photoshop and iWeb incredibly well. Is there any way for me to create a design template using one of those programs and then have it “translated” into an actual theme?

OR If I designed the exact layout in iWeb to my specifications, how much would it cost to hire somebody to "translate" it into code for me?

Unfortunately, a good WordPress skin requires at least a working knowledge of PHP, HTML and CSS.

Actually, those are all required in any Web application skinning / theme creation.

Help with wordpress theme?

How do you change the menu bar in this theme?

http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/japan-style

Right now, it shows only "Home" and "About" but I need to add more options.

I'm not very familiar with CSS or code, so any help would be welcome.

That menu is a list of the pages. To add more, just go into the Wordpress admin panel: under "Pages" click "Add New"

Those pages should then show in the menu.

No coding necessary :)

Word Press – How to remove the text on the header?

<?php get_header(); ?>
<?php $options = get_option('inove_options'); ?>

This is the code of the theme, its not the normal echo get_option home bloginfo kind of coding…

Please help, I am new to this. THANKS!

You have to follow the get_header() call to see what get_header() does. Then follow that. Eventually you'll get to the header itself, and you'll be able to delete what you want from it.

where can I find somebody who can help me design my Wordpress Blog? Cheap / or free of charge!?

I've already got a template I like and have used it. I'm NOT looking for template sites. I'm basically looking for someone to take the project off me and tweak it, as I don't have the time or patience!

i think the other answerers have missed the point – he / she is after an existing template adjusting by someone – as he /she does not have the time or patience to do it themselves

Wordpress theme Color Scheme Change?

I am using a free wordpress theme. Is there a plugin or tool to change the color scheme of the theme? I am tweaking the style.css with trial and error. But is there easier method to do so?

Thanks.

The CSS file is the way to go. You should be able to change any color you want from there.

If you’re using Firefox, then install Firebug… it will help you identify the code you need to edit.
