How do I Upload themes to my custom domain name by wordpress?

So i created a domain name through wordpress, but i can’t upload my own theme by Expression Web 2. I know i could use the upgrade for css, but is there an alternative?

You can add themes to wordpress manually or from your wordpress admin control panel.

Via the control panel:
1. Log into your WordPress site
2. Select "Appearance" – "Add New Themes"
3. Set the search dropdown to "Term"
4. Enter the theme you want in the box provided
5. Select "Search"
6. When you find the theme you want, select "Install"

The theme should install and be available for activation under "Appearance" – "Themes" once it is done downloading.

Manual Install:
1. Download the theme you want
2. Extract your theme
3. Upload the theme to your wp-content/themes directory

Once uploaded, you should see the theme under "Appearance" – "Themes" in your WordPress control panel.

If a theme doesn’t display:
You probably uploaded the wrong folder. The theme folder is the one with a style.css file in it. Occasionally, theme creators package their themes strangely. Just find the folder with style.css in it and upload that folder to /wp-content/themes on your server.

what do i need/need to do to customize a Joomla or wordpress template?

what do i need/need to do to customize a Joomla or wordpress template?

besides dreamweaver , do i need to know coding to customize a already built template? all i know is html nothing else…is that a problem?

wordpress and joomla work in very different ways.
both use php to make calls. Wordpress has a pretty good guide on what all the php calls are and how u can tweak them in your html editor to do different things.

Wordpress is made up of various php templates (header, index, footer, sidebar etc) and then the mysql populates the pages dynamically.

Joomla is a bit more tricky, essentially it is made up of just 1 page. Between the php calls and the mysql html/php from other libraries and content from the database make up the end pages.

All of these are styled almost completely from CSS so that’s something your going to have to pick up.

When working with existing templates you will find that the work can be done in the templates, its always somewhat risky changing the core files of the platform.

So learn the php calls and understand the template structure of files. From there on you can do whatever you want.

Can you change a Wordpress theme to a custom theme free?

This might have a simple answer to it, but I know there are themes that Wordpress gives you to choose from for free. Is there any way that I could change the theme to one I found on a website without buying extra features?

And if not, what would I have to purchase to change it?

Thank you so much!

Nope. You need to upgrade your wordpress.com account. It’s right in your wordpress admin.

Why isn’t my WordPress layout working in internet explorer?

Here is the blog page:

http://www.wavgirl.com/home/newblog

If you open it in firefox or other browsers, it works fine. The menu at the top is on all pages on my site (via a php include). All pages also are linked to a main stylesheet for my website. Everything works in internet explorer EXCEPT that blog page. This means that there is something specifically in the blog’s style sheet that doesn’t work in IE. When you open the above link in IE, the page is thrown off center, and the menu does not work anymore. Can someone simply look at this stylesheet and tell me how to correct it for internet explorer? As I said, all of this loads fine in other browsers, and the menu works on all other pages of the site in any browser.

Stylesheet temporarily uploaded to: http://www.wavgirl.com/temp/style.css
Thank you for your nice reply. I wasn’t able to find anything helpful but I started from scratch with a new theme and managed to iron out all the glitches so it would work with my site’s CSS.

Yowch!

You’re going to have to write code specifically for IE and use conditional comments to keep from messing up real browsers. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms537512(VS.85).aspx if you don’t have a link.

BTW, nice blog. I like your writing style.

How successful would a boutique web design firm be in today’s economy?

I’m considering opening up a small web design shop as a side business within the next year or so, mainly focusing on small businesses and non-profits. I’m curious to know if there is a still a healthy market for site design, considering many small businesses are now using self-publishing platforms like WordPress and other tools. Thanks!

Baristo,

There are a a lot of challenges associated with the starting a small web design shop – (especially targeting small business!) My experience with design work for small business is that they expect a lot for their money, and they don’t always understand that the time it takes for you to explain something to them and help them understand the web is time that you need to be making money.

The nonprofit industry on the other hand can be quite lively and it is not unusual for large nonprofits to need design work regularly. Doing work for an established nonprofit that has a marketing budget is a completely different story. Of course, to get that kind of work requires a lot of work because you have to prove to them that you can deliver. We respond to RFPs from nonprofits all the time and sometimes it takes 10 – 12 hours just to complete the proposal.

The answer to your question is really yes, there is plenty of need for design despite people using self publishing and templates.

But more importantly, the business can be very tough and you need to be well networked and have processes that work. (Including your business development process!)

For the networking you might want to start at NTEN, the Nonprofit Technology Community

With regard to the processes I would highly highly recommend reading the E-Myth Revisited

Changing templates on Wordpress?

What settings (if any) could you lose in changing your theme/template on Wordpress? My mom’s been using the same Wordpress template for some time, and she’s worried if I switch the template for her that she’ll lose the information/settings she currently has up. I’m guessing you loose some of the customization (things added into the sidebar, for instance), but I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t lose any of your posts/archived stuff. She’d like to be sure, though, first.

You lose no posts or archives or comments when you switch themes.

When you switch themes, the templates from your old theme, as customized, remain in place; if necessary, you can download, for instance, sidebar.php from the old directory and copy any modifications to the new version, subject to the new theme’s CSS. If both themes are widget-aware, widgets should transfer without incident.
