Opinion’s on racism in the new song “Run this Town” by Jay Z?
This is not the first time Jay Z has produced lyrics that can be viewed as racist. Not only am I offended by the "all black everything," other lyrics, and the video, I am equally offended by the usage of the word "homo" by West. If I, as a proud, white individual used the "N" word so freely in a song, I would be crucified by the press!
The double standard regarding racism in our country is horrifying. As a white individual, I am always expected to feel guilty about my white ancestry, even though my mother moved from Europe to America in the 1960s; thus neither my immediate family nor my ancestors participated in the institution of slavery. However, after reading the book, The Known World, by Edward P. Jones, I was completely shocked by the tradition of freed black Americans buying farmlands and purchasing other black Americans to work those farmlands during pre-civil war America. This is a piece of history thoughtfully omitted from most American history books.
And, yes, I said, “black Americans.” I refuse to use African-American because I feel we are all AMERICANS … period; no hyphenation, no separation. Doesn’t using African-American go against the entire civil rights movement? I thought the central theme of this movement was to not be separate and to be looked upon as being equal.
I know I will be looked upon as being a racist for these comments. However, if the white community created a television network celebrating the history and accomplishments of only white individuals, or a magazine devoted to white issues, or white award shows, or scholarships for outstanding white students, or a white history month, etc., then these white participants would be viewed as racists.
It’s unfortunate that white AND black Americans have to suffer through any type of racism. However, I will not allow the acts of a small, racist minority to continue to tarnish my history as a white American.
So, what’s your opinion? And, please, let’s debate this issue without unnecessary attacks upon each other. This is the reason why race relations are still so poor in our society; we are unable to engage in intelligent agreements/disagreements without attacking each other personally.
To respond to "Being … any other minority is hard to understand if you don’t put yourself in their shoes." I can put myself in their shoes. You see, I am gay. Therefore, I understand being attacked daily, beaten, and overlooked by our government. Maybe I should have mentioned this in a footnote.
To Alexis: Are you kidding me? This is the reason why I picked the new song by Jay Z, I knew it would strike up many uneducated responses. Just to keep others up-to-date on what you said,
"Itz not even that serious.. U need to chill tha fxck down just cuz he sayz no homo. Aint nobody tryna offend gay ppl in that song. Nd all black everythin dont even refer to race. Hez talkin bout carz nd shxt"
This response is the epitome of stupidity. And you totally missed the point. I asked for an intelligent debate. No bashing, no taking what I said personally.
Once again, if I said the “N” word in a song and then told people not to take it personally, do you think they would? Absolutely! The double standard in our society is amazing!
As a black person I really have no respect for Jay Z, no one likes to believe a black man can promote racism/segregation.
My race is irrelevant – but when someone like this starts making uneducated statements he just passes it on to the hoards of young people listening to his music.
We are all human, no race is better than another race – Jay Z lets us all down – black, white, whatever you wanna call it.

racism should be avoided

I agree with you. I don’t see the point in that BET channel, for black entertainment, how ridiculous, does their skin colour determine that they wont like entertainment that white people have so they need a new TV station? I think the reason there isnt white award shows and channels and stuff is because white people are the majoirty in the US where as black people are a minority. And yes, white people would be viewed as racist if they said pretty much anything about black people, black people aren’t viewed as racist when they say it because people feel they should be allowed to say it because of what happened to their ancestors. Frankly, everyone needs to get over that. It happened ages ago and it doesn’t happen anymore so people should stop living in the past and move on.

I know what you mean. Im white too and I hear black people say "Honk**" and "crac***". all the time.
P.diddy said on one of his lyrics on the album "press play"
"fuc**** with the white man"…WTF?!
And method man says a couple of times "crac***".
Its complete bs. I am totally against racism in ALL forms because I honestly think that this day and age, we should all be past this already. I just think its hypocritical for others to use racism in lyrics/statements and people blow it off, but get upset when it’s used against them.

As a side note, I know what faustus means because I came to America from Germany, and everyone thinks im a Nazi.

I don’t think you’re racist, but I don’t think you have a good perspective of racial issues.
Issues of race and racism are tricky. There are no clear cut lines. You’re not dealing with mathematics here.
Being a black person or any other minority is hard to understand if you don’t put yourself in their shoes.

Although I’m Australian, I can relate to your’ problem: the prey becomes the predator. I have a strong German background and I’ve been called NAZI by other white kids just because I have German heritage and that kinda hurts.
I think people can be patriotic without being racist. Unfortunately, many ethnic groups take advantage of modern social acceptance by lording over other groups.
Nietzsche once said "He who fights with monsters should be careful lest he thereby become a monster. And if thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee."

2 Things:
1 – How does the usage of the word "homo" offend, unless you are gay?
2 – Saying "all black everything" just shows that Jay z prefers to have black things (girls) than White or Asian. Have you ever had a black, mixed race or Asian wife? No, because it is ‘weird’ to marry someone different like that.
Why do you feel guilty about your ancestry. Do you think German people feel guilty about the Nazis? Do you think British people feel guilty about what they did to the Boer’s? Do you think the French feel guilty about what they did in Algeria when they invaded there? No. Be proud that your American.
I agree with your comment on the ‘N word’. I Fail to understand why that is seen as more racist than calling an Asian person a ‘paki’. They are both equally offensive, so why do we have news reporters who say the word ‘paki’ and not ‘nigger’.
